A pursuit in downtown Fresno left nine people injured while the driver who was being chased fled the scene.

Fresno police Lt. Alfonso Castillo said the incident unfolded around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. While parked on a one-way road outside the Fresno County Superior Courthouse, two deputies noticed a white sedan speeding while driving the wrong direction.

The deputies turned on their sirens and prepared to stop the vehicle, but the driver didn’t pull over.

A pursuit ensued. As the chase neared the intersection of Stanislaus and M streets, the deputies’ vehicle crashed into a Fresno city bus.

“We got a total of seven people on this city bus injured,” Castillo said, noting the driver was among those impacted.

The two deputies were also taken to a nearby hospital for minor injuries.

The white sedan fled the scene. Castillo said the driver is looking at felony charges, and law enforcement is canvassing the area for surveillance footage.
