LONG BEACH, Miss. (WLOX) — The Long Beach Police Department arrested a Gulfport man for what it said was a fatal hit-and-run wreck that happened Sunday morning.
The department announced the arrest of 46-year-old Eric C. Smith on Wednesday. Officials said Smith was charged with one count of leaving the scene of an accident-causing fatality.

Long Beach police said the arrest came after an investigation into the wreck, which happened on First Street. Officials said Smith hit 36-year-old Jimmy Alexander Mero with his vehicle and left the scene without contacting help.
Mero was taken to Gulfport Memorial Hospital, where he died.
Smith was transported to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center. His bond was set at $250,000 by Justice Court Judge T. Lyons.
