LAKEWOOD — Senior quarterback Lexi Loya had four total touchdowns to lead the St. Joseph girls flag football team to a convincing 25-6 victory over Long Beach Poly in a nonleague game Wednesday.
St. Joseph, which is ranked No. 1 in the latest Press-Telegram Top 10, improved to 9-0 overall. Loya threw three touchdown passes and three interceptions. She also scored on a 5-yard run on the Jesters’ first offensive possession in the first quarter.
“My team is very well equipped and I think we played pretty good today,” said Loya, who is a four-year starter. “I think we can always do better. There’s always room for improvement.”
Junior receiver/safety Jaclynn Brennan had touchdown catches of 13 and 41 yards. She also hauled in an interception before halftime to keep St, Jopseh up 19-6.
“On the field, I think it shows how much our off-field chemistry applies on the field,” Brennan said of her connection with Loya. “She can trust me for any deep ball, and I think it really shows how much trust we put in each other and how much trust she puts in our teammates. I think that every deep ball I just know I’m going to go get it if she puts it up there. I think if we both do our jobs, it executes on touchdowns together.”
“She’s been phenomenal,” Loya continued. “Jacki is always reliable. I know I can always throw it up and she’ll make a break on it, but that’s how all my receivers are. I’m very blessed.”
Loya’s third touchdown pass of the game went to junior receiver Olivia Diette from 5 yards out with 3:53 left in the game to make the score 25-6.
“I thought the girls played very hard,” said St. Joseph coach Tim Loya, who is Lexi Loya’s dad. “We hit some good reads, so we had some nice touchdowns and then played some good D. We had a good goal-line stand so that was nice.”
St. Joseph’s next game is against Wilson of Los Angeles on Wednesday, Sept. 9.
Poly (0-6) was led by sophomore Amai’a Johnson, who scored on a 35-yard interception return in the first quarter. Johnson’s pick-six cut it to 7-6 late in the first. The PAT was no good.
Long Beach Poly sophomore Naveah Johnson and junior Kamelah Artiaga also hauled in interceptions.
“Our defense is going to have to carry us,” Poly coach Rob Shock said. “We have to learn on offense.”
Poly, which is led by senior quarterback Kenzie Paimany, will begin Moore League play at Jordan on Wednesday, Sept. 9.
“Everybody is getting better every year,” Shock said. “Moore League is going to be tough. Our biggest thing is we have to work as a team to get better. And that’s what’s important for us, is to build on our chemistry and then put plays together, put drives together that give our defense rest and allow us to score. We’ve got to score. We have to be better at scoring.”
