Five people were injured – one critically – in a shooting near a Safeway supermarket in San Francisco’s Outer Richmond neighborhood Saturday night, police said.

Officers arrived in the area of Fulton Street and the Great Highway around 9 p.m. and found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds, the San Francisco Police Department said in a statement. One adult was taken to a hospital with critical injuries and four others with minor wounds, fire department spokesperson Samuel Menchaca said.

“A fight broke out shortly before 9 p.m. which resulted in the shooting. So far we have five victims that were transported to San Francisco General Hospital,” SFPD Capt. Kevin Lee said on the scene.

The shooting occurred near a Safeway store at Fulton and La Playa streets.

Police said the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident and there was no general threat to the public. Officers had made no arrests in connection with the shooting Saturday night.

“This kind of violence does not represent who we are as a city, and we will never tolerate it,” San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said in a statement.

The shooting caused chaos and sent onlookers scattering. Among them was Tommy Corcoran, 19.

Corcoran had moved to the Bay Area from Phoenix a week ago with his father. Corcoran said he had traveled to San Francisco to see the Golden Gate Bridge, then walked down to Ocean Beach because he had heard that people often hold bonfires there.

He said that he was walking through Golden Gate Park near the beach when he heard what sounded like a car backfiring, then a flurry of gunfire, and suddenly saw everyone scattering, some running toward the Safeway.

Corcoran slid behind a log and tried to hide, losing his phone in the process.

“I’m gonna get home,” he said.

Police ask anyone with information on the shooting to contact the SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411.
