A Gulfport man has been arrested and charged after the hit-and-run death Sunday of Jimmy Alexander Mero in Long Beach.
The Long Beach Police Department arrested 46 year-old Eric C. Smith, of Gulfport, on Tuesday and charged him with one count of leaving the scene of an accident-causing fatality.

In a news release, the department said the arrest was the result of the investigation into the hit-and-run incident that occurred on 1st Street, where Smith allegedly struck Jimmy Alexander Mero with his vehicle and left the scene without contacting help. Mero was later taken to Gulfport Memorial Hospital where he died from his injuries.
Smith was taken to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center and jailed on a $250,000 bond set by Justice Court Judge T. Lyons, pending further court action.
