An Anaheim City Council member Wednesday said city officials were surprised by a report, which was later retracted, that Rams owner Stan Kroenke intended to build a $2.5 billion stadium to replace Angel Stadium when his purchase of the Angels is completed.

“That was the first we heard of it,” Anaheim City Councilwoman Natalie Meeks.

The Forbes report on Kroenke’s plans to build a new stadium on the parking lot while the current one is razed for parking was taken down later Wednesday.

Meeks said there are many questions and options to consider going forward when the sale is expected to go through by year’s end.

“The new owner will be stepping into the current lease,” Meeks noted.

Kroenke “will need to come in and talk to the city at one point and what future is there for the lease, the property, the stadium and all those things,” Meeks said.

“We don’t know what their proposal would be at this point,” Meeks said.

Angels owner Arte Moreno is leasing the stadium property, so the new owner will have to negotiate with city officials on ownnership versus rental as well as whether to build a new stadium or remodel the existing one.

“We all agree that at some point the stadium needs significant remodeling” if the new owner keeps it, Meeks said.

Results of a “fairly extensive assessment of the stadium” are expected by year’s end, Meeks said.

“We’ll know what the current stadium situation is then,” she said.

Meeks is open-minded about remodeling the stadium or construction of a new one.

“I think either one could serve us moving forward,” Meeks said. “As old as our current stadium is, the capacity, the sightlines and things like that are actually very good.”

Other issues to consider are how construction at the stadium site would connect to the OC Vibe project, Meeks said.

“We will always be thinking how can we connect our destinations and make them seamless and provide a good experience for those coming to our city,” she said.

Overall, Meeks said she was excited about the team’s future.

“I’m a huge Angels fan and have been since I was a kid,” she said. “I’m very excited about the future for them. I’d love to see the team win more and get back in the playoffs and really provide the fans a winning team… I’m an optimistic person anyway, but I’m very excited and I think we have a great future ahead.”
