While the world mourns the loss of renowned activist and journalist, Gloria Steinem, one high-profile attorney shares she will help keep Steinem’s mission alive.

Gloria Allred, known for taking on high-profile cases and women’s rights cases, reflected on her relationship with Steinem in an interview with NBCLA. Speaking on Thursday, she shared her admiration for the late feminist icon and how she vows to help continue her legacy.

“Gloria Steinem was an inspirational role model, a pioneer and a person who has made herstory,” Allred said. “Not history, but herstory.”

Steinem died Wednesday at the age of 92, a statement posted to her Instagram confirmed. Although a cause of death was not disclosed, the longtime activist had been in declining physical health.

“I was shocked and I was saddened this morning when I woke up to hear that she had passed,” Allred said.

Looking back on time they’ve spent together, Allred recalled a joint profile they were featured in back in 2019.

“I had the honor and the pleasure of being with her in her home in New York City a number of years ago when a British publication was doing an article on the two Glorias and that was during, I think, during the first term of President Trump,” Allred said. “And she had a wonderful sense of humor, and we talked about the challenges ahead and what needed to be done.”

Steinem was known for her trademark humor. Even in her later years and amid her ailing health, her wit remained intact.

“She was authentic, she was honest, she made statements that just made one think and I’d never heard from anyone else,” Allred said of Steinem.

The attorney emphasized that she will honor Steinem by continuing her work.

“I had to stop for a moment when I learned this morning that she passed, but I knew that she would not want me to pause one more moment and to continue the fight, which I intend to do,” Allred said.

“We’re not going back; we’re only going forward. She has passed, but the torch is being passed … she would want us to continue.”
