A popular Sacramento thrift store featured on the silver screen is staying open for a few more weeks, extending its business until the end of September.
Valley Thrift Town at 410 El Camino Ave. was originally set to close in late August. The store will still be permanently closing, according to Neeko Alkakos, who runs the secondhand shop.
The thrift store was featured in the 2017 film “Lady Bird,” which was set and shot in Sacramento by director Greta Gerwig, who is from the area.
The extended closure is to “give the customers more time to shop,” as the store is currently selling all its inventory, Alkakos said. The store was purchased in July. Alkakos did not say why it was sold or who the buyer was
Merchandise is 85% off across the store, Alkakos said. This sale applies to clothing, houseware, jewelry, shoes and costumes, according to its social media.
This isn’t the first time Thrift Town has shut. In 2020, the store, as well as its counterparts in Contra Costa County, Carmichael, and south Sacramento, closed. The closures were prompted by a decrease in business due to COVD-19.
That’s when the Alkakos family and a group of employees bought the El Camino Avenue location from Norquist Salvage. A year later, the store reopened as Valley Thrift Town.
Valley Thrift Town is owned primarily by Neeko Alkakos’s father, Sam Alkakos, he said.
The store is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
