FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — The City of Florence has received grant funding from the South Carolina Office of Resilience for a stormwater improvement project aimed at reducing flooding in parts of the city.
The North Church Street and Oakland Avenue stormwater enhancement project will improve the existing drainage system along the Oakland Avenue and Norfolk Street corridors, according to the city.
Construction is expected to begin in mid-to-late September and be completed in early summer 2027.
The project will include the installation of larger stormwater pipes, new catch basins and other drainage improvements. City officials said the upgrades are designed to address localized flooding that can occur during periods of heavy rainfall.

The construction area includes Oakland Avenue from Layton Street to Norfolk Street and Norfolk Street from Oakland Avenue to Brand Street.
Drivers should expect temporary lane closures, traffic detours and other construction-related impacts because much of the work will take place within the roadways.
The city is asking motorists and residents traveling through the area to use caution around construction crews and equipment.
