Kelsea Nieves has been waiting for The Posh Bagel to open for a while.

She teaches at The Dance Studio 2, a couple of doors down from the new bagel place at 2940 E. Nees Avenue, Ste. 103. Nieves already knew about The Posh Bagel as a brand from a location she visited in the Bay Area.

“All of us over there have been really excited because the dancers start early on Saturdays, so we were really looking forward to breakfast,” Nieves said.

When Nieves and her husband, Chris, were out walking with their stroller to get coffee Sept. 3, they were pleasantly surprised to see that The Posh Bagel had opened earlier in the week.

The new place is the brainchild of manager Goretti Almeida, who owned Le Parisien Cafe, and also previously worked at The Bakery by Indulge Right Foods, a gluten-free dessert place. As bagels finished baking, she pulled them out of the oven, but came out from behind the counter to hug a customer who recognized her.

Posh Bagels makes everything in-house, including the pastries under a glass cloche on the counter. A baker comes in to prepare the dough, and they proof and bake the bagels on-site, something Almeida hadn’t done before.

“I’m every day learning more,” Almeida said.

The coffee is from Supreme Bean, a new Fresno-based coffee supplier, and despite the fact that The Posh Bagel is part of a chain, what’s on offer was decided by the local team. So far, the bestselling bagels have been jalapeno cheddar, asiago, pizza and pesto, but Almeida has a sweet tooth; she prefers blueberry and cinnamon sugar.

Owner Justin Henry says that even though he and Almeida worked together for a year to bring The Posh Bagel to the area, the credit belongs to her.

“Goretti has worked extremely hard,” Henry said.

Henry also owns Loving Seed, a juice bar, smoothie and acai bowl brand with four locations, all in the Central Valley. This is his first time branching out into breakfast.

He wanted the environment of the shop to feel like a big city, so on one wall there’s a mural of San Francisco. Exposed brick dots the interior, and each of the tables has an outlet where people can charge their phones or laptops if they decide to sit and work or meet a friend.

“We just want people to have a really good experience,” Henry said.

For the Nieves, it was a chance to have a quiet moment on a Friday morning. Kelsea ordered a cinnamon raisin bagel and a vanilla latte, while Chris got a cup of coffee and the Angry Bee, a breakfast sandwich with turkey bacon, egg and Vermont cheddar or hot honey.

They sat in one of the chairs as they waited for their food. Beside the table, they parked their stroller; their newborn inside was still asleep.
