Northern Californians savor summer’s final days with outdoor activities
As Labor Day approaches, Northern California families are taking advantage of mild weather to enjoy outdoor activities along the American River and Folsom Lake.
“I looked at the weather app and it said it was going to be nice this afternoon, so we came,” said Marin Whitaker, who was enjoying Folsom Lake.
“It’s really mild here in Northern California and I’m enjoying it,” said Josh Stover, who was also at Folsom Lake. “I’m having a great time and it’s almost time for me to go catch some salmon, and the rivers are perfect for it.”
Some visitors are squeezing in boating trips ahead of the holiday weekend.

“We’ve been out this season like three times, but the lake’s a lot lower today than it was even when we were here like two weeks ago,” Whitaker said.
As more people plan to head to the rivers, American River Raft Rentals says reservations are filling up for the holiday weekend.
“Memorial Day to Labor Day is our busy season. We had a bit of a slow start. I mean, it was a little bit of a mild summer, never too hot. We started out a bit worried about water flows, but water flows ended up being perfect,” said Kent Hansen of American River Raft Rentals.
Hansen added that after a summer of fast-moving water, rafters can expect milder conditions this weekend.

“Fast-moving water all season long until about a week ago, it came down to 2,500, which means this weekend in mid-80s is going to be ultra safe with nice mild flows to make our 3-to-4-hour float nice and easy for people of all ages,” Hansen said.
Officials remind visitors heading to the American River within Sacramento County jurisdiction or Sherman Island that an alcohol ban will be in effect during the holiday weekend.
Boaters are also advised to check lake-specific inspection requirements and regulations to prevent the spread of golden mussels.
