A Sacramento Sheriff’s Office K-9 helped arrest a suspect after a late night chase Saturday, Sept. 5.
A K-9 unit helped apprehend a suspect involved in a police chase that began shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday in downtown Sacramento, authorities said.
At around 12:45 a.m., Sacramento Police Department officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop near J and Seventh streets after observing a vehicle driving recklessly, according to department spokesperson Officer Allison Smith. The vehicle failed to yield to police and a pursuit ensued.
The vehicle traveled northbound on I–5 to Del Paso before heading southbound and onto the I-80, according to police dispatch audio reviewed by The Sacramento Bee. The suspect traveled westbound into Yolo County as far as Davis before turning east.
With California Highway Patrol in pursuit, the vehicle connected to I-50 and re-entered Sacramento before traveling southbound on I-99. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office took over as the primary agency in pursuit, following the vehicle as it exited near Fruitridge Road.
A Sacramento Police Department officer was able to successfully deploy spike stripes in the area of Freeport Boulevard and Sutterville Road near Land Park, Smith said.
A Sheriff’s Office K-9 assisted in apprehending the subject, with the pursuit ending at Sutterville Avenue and 24th Street, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. spokesperson Ed Igoe. The chase ended around 1:20 a.m. and the suspect was taken into custody.
