Fresno City College football coach Josh Brown is always satisfied with a win.
However, forgive him for having a few “what ifs” about his Rams after a 24-10 victory over Foothill in a nonconference game Saturday at Ratcliffe Stadium.
“I’ll never apologize for a win,” said Brown, in his first season as Fresno City’s head coach. “There’s a lot of stuff we still have to clean up, and much of it’s self-inflicted. Penalties and turnovers in the red zone, things like that. Things that we can prevent. Making makeable field goals.
“Realistically, we should have been up 28-0 at the start of the game, or really 24-0, but credit to them. Foothill did a good job and fought back in the game, keeping it close. Winning is the most important thing, but we have a lot of stuff we still need to clean up on our end.”
The Rams had opportunities to build a much larger lead but couldn’t capitalize.
Kicker Jared Roberts missed two field goals in the second quarter, while quarterback Christian English threw an interception at the Foothill 5-yard line in the same quarter.
Fresno City improved to 2-0 after opening the season with a 22-18 victory over Sierra. That win looks even more impressive after the Wolverines defeated defending CCCAA state champion San Mateo 29-25 in four overtimes.
The Rams will face their biggest test yet when they visit City College of San Francisco on Sept. 12.
Brown hopes his team will learn from its mistakes against Foothill and be ready for CCSF.
“We want to make sure that we score points no matter what,” he said. “Today, we didn’t do a great job with that. We want to make sure we pound the ball, and that’s who we are. That’s kind of our motto. We want to be that team nobody wants to play against.
“Being able to run the ball in the fourth quarter … that’s how you win a lot of games.”
