We’ll never suddenly come across a Triceratops while trekking through a dense and leafy landscape, but there is an opportunity to behold creatures that lived eons ago in eye-catching holographic form thanks to the tech of tomorrow.
That tomorrow tech is here today, in Long Beach, with fully realized holographic dinosaurs on view every 30 minutes at the Aquarium of the Pacific. The new theater experience, which debuted in early September, is devoted to sizable holographic imagery presented with engaging educational information, no glasses or headsets needed.
Prepare to step inside “the first HoloTheater on the U.S. West Coast,” a venue that is giving vibrant “life” to prehistoric animals through a complex holographic system.
And the theater’s first film at the Long Beach-based aquarium? “Dinosaur Discovers: A Holographic Adventure,” which is now screening throughout the day every day the aquarium is open.

“Dinosaur Discoveries: A Holographic Adventure” is on view at the Aquarium of the Pacific’s new HoloTheater.
The film “… transports audiences across prehistoric landscapes to encounter some of the most extraordinary creatures to ever walk the Earth,” with highlights hailing “paleontological discoveries and scientific revelations,” shared the aquarium.
The “educational journey,” which runs 25 minutes, was “… produced by BASE Xperiential in partnership with Paquin Entertainment Group and distributed in collaboration with MacGillivray Freeman Films.”
Six projection surfaces help to spectacularly summon long-gone realms inside the aquarium’s Ocean Theater, while layered, bring-it-all-to-life audio provides the audience a deeper thrill.
And while the cool critters at centerstage will garner the audience’s focus, look also for authentic depictions of the environments where these beasties once roamed and ruled.
“We are looking forward to having the first HoloTheater experience on the West Coast as a new immersive experience for our guests,” said Nicole Meek, the Aquarium’s senior director of visitor operations.
“We hope they leave inspired to learn more about ocean animals that lived on our planet at the same time as dinosaurs and are still with us today, from sea jellies to sharks.”
The experience begins every 30 minutes at the aquarium’s Ocean Theater, giving you time to check out the June Keyes Penguin Habitat, Jelly Dreamscapes, and other aquarium exhibits.
