Pursuit ends in deadly shooting, closes Highway 50 in Sacramento County

A deadly shooting involving three law enforcement agencies shut down westbound Highway 50 Tuesday morning in Sacramento County, the California Highway Patrol said.
The shooting happened on Highway 50 near Hazel Avenue. The freeway is closed westbound from Hazel Avenue to Sunrise Boulevard.
It started when California Highway Patrol officers stopped a vehicle around 11:20 p.m. Monday on Folsom Boulevard because its headlights were off, officers said. The driver initially stopped but then took off. This led to a pursuit through the Rancho Cordova and Fair Oaks areas, CHP said.
Other agencies joined the pursuit, which ended around 12:05 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 50 at Hazel Avenue. The vehicle stopped, and the driver got out with what appeared to be a gun in their hand, CHP said. That’s when officers with the California Highway Patrol, Citrus Heights Police and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office opened fire and shot the suspect, CHP said.
First responders rendered aid on scene, and the suspect was taken to the hospital, where they died, officers said.
It’s unclear if a weapon was recovered.
The westbound side of Highway 50 is closed while law enforcement investigates the shooting. There is no estimated time of reopening.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area, find other ways around the closure and prepare for delays throughout the morning commute.
