OAKLAND — A fire at a homeless encampment early Tuesday destroyed an RV, injured a dog and sent high plumes of smoke into the air that could be seen for miles, fire officials said.
The blaze did not cause any injuries to humans.
The fire started about 6:25 a.m. in the 700 block of Kirkham Street. The area is a homeless camp with a mixture of RVs, tents and other structures.
Three dogs were at the scene, including one that was leashed to the RV. That dog was rescued along with the two others. Fire officials said one of the dogs had minor injuries.
Those dogs were turned over to animal control services.
Fire investigators were working to determine the cause of the blaze. Fire crews brought it under control in less than 20 minutes.
