Timelapse: See how a deadly Highway 50 law enforcement shooting snarled Sacramento County traffic
A deadly shooting involving multiple law enforcement agencies in Sacramento County snarled Highway 50 traffic on Tuesday morning.
Because of the large crime scene following a pursuit that ended with officers firing their weapons, multiple command units were established along westbound Highway 50 at Hazel Avenue.
It started as a traffic stop around 11:20 p.m. Monday, when a driver initially stopped but then kept driving, prompting a chase. The California Highway Patrol said spike strips were used to stop the vehicle around 12:05 a.m. Tuesday.
CHP said law enforcement saw what they thought was the driver with a weapon before gunfire broke out.
For hours, westbound lanes have been closed, and lanes would not reopen until around 9:20 a.m.
While lanes are reopened, congestion is expected for a while longer.

Details were not released on how many officers fired their weapons and how many actually hit the driver. The driver’s identity was not released, only that he is male.
The agencies involved in the shooting were CHP, the Citrus Heights Police Department and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the sheriff’s office, no officers or deputies were injured in the shooting.
