Thousands of union workers gathered in Wilmington on Monday, Sept. 7, to recognize Labor Day and the contributions U.S. workers provide year-round.
The 47th annual event, sponsored by the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Labor Coalition, kicked off with a news conference at East E Street and Broad Avenue before marching along Avalon Boulevard to Banning Park for a rally and picnic.

“This is a South Bay tradition,” said Larry Barragan, who has been chair of the event for 11 years.
Labor leaders took the stage at the park for speeches as an expected crowd of 5,000-7,000 people enjoyed a day off from work on Monday, Sept. 7. Some 50 unions were expected to be represented, he said.
“We have people from various parts of California taking buses to come from as far as San Diego and Santa Clarita,” Barragan said.
The purpose is to show the strength and unity among workers, including teachers, steelworkers, actors, plumbers, gig drivers, fishermen, firefighters, longshore workers, carpenters and others.
This year saw strong overall participation, Barragan said, in part fueled by the upcoming midterm elections.
“People get stimulated at this time,” he said, referring to issues the nation is dealing with. “Workers have concerns about rising costs of gasoline, rent and food as paychecks are running thin. Workers are getting tired.”
The carpenters, longshore and teamsters’ unions provide strong representation each year, he said.
The gathering also featured marching bands, live music, a best-decorated float trophy and free hot dogs.
