A thief who broke into a Lake Superior waterfront resort in Paradise, Michigan, on Sept. 2 and stole more than $3,000 was arrested and charged after Michigan State troopers used an electronic stun device to stop him from fleeing.
The 35-year-old man was arraigned Sept. 4 in Chippewa County district court on one count of first degree home invasion, larceny in a building, and assault/resist a police officer, the Michigan State Police Eight District said on X on Sept. 8. The suspect’s bond was set at $10,000 cash with tether and other conditions.
An MSP trooper was dispatched to the Paradise Lakefront Lodge, located off M-123 just south of the main intersection in the village, at about 11 a.m. Sept. 3 after a reported theft at the hotel the previous evening.
Police say an individual broke into a room and stole about $3,040 in cash. The stolen money was recovered and will be returned to the victims.
The trooper reviewed surveillance footage and the suspect was identified as a California man working seasonally in the area. The trooper located the man attempted to place him under arrest, but the man fled on foot.
After the trooper ordered the suspect to stop, he used “a department-issued TASER, temporarily incapacitating the suspect and allowing the trooper to take him into custody.”
The man was evaluated for minor injuries, was medically cleared and lodged in the Chippewa County Jail, the MSP said.
He is next due in court on Sept. 17, 2026.
Paradise is located about 11 miles from both Tahquamenon Falls State Park and Whitefish Point.
