Pedestrian struck by vehicle, killed on Highway 50 in Sacramento
SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
A pedestrian died Tuesday night after being struck by a vehicle on westbound Highway 50 in Sacramento on Tuesday night, officials said.
Dispatchers around 9:55 p.m. got a report of a pedestrian lying on the W/X portion of the highway east of Interstate 5, the California Highway Patrol said. Officers who responded found a man dead at the scene.
CHP said its early investigation indicated that the man was within the No. 7 lane of westbound Highway 50. At the same time, a motorist was traveling along that same lane and noticed another vehicle ahead.
The motorist suddenly swerved to the left to avoid the vehicle, but the motorist could not stop in time to avoid crashing into him, CHP said.
The motorist stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, CHP said. DUI is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Details were not released on the identity of the pedestrian killed.
Multiple lanes were blocked before officers cleared the scene.
This was the third deadly situation along Highway 50 on Tuesday.
During the overnight hours, a pursuit ended with officers from multiple agencies firing their weapons and killing the driver they were chasing. That took place on westbound Highway 50 at Hazel Avenue.
Later in the afternoon, a woman was killed outside a Panera Bread on Howe Avenue, and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said it used Flock’s camera system to track down the suspected killer. Deputies confronted the person along eastbound Highway 50 at Watt Avenue, and the standoff ended after the person fatally shot himself.
