Kids enjoying a rollicking adventure in a fall-themed movie seem to be having an absolute ball; they’re often outside, in nature, and Halloween sights are lighting up the night in all sorts of spectacular and spooky ways.
We can find those atmospheric outdoorsy moments in a few real-world spots during the fall, if we know to follow the glow.
And one of the most gorgeous and glowful places in Southern California will begin to shimmer Sept. 18, when the Magic of the Jack O’Lanterns opens at South Coast Botanic Garden.
Evocatively and ethereally opens, we should absolutely say. This is the illuminated experience that gives guests the uplifting opportunity to go on a starlit stroll by thousands of well-carved and well-lit pumpkins.
Displays, too, that speak to the spirit of autumn and seasonal traditions also add a delightful and sometimes goosebump-filled note.

Jack o’lanterns cleverly stacked and place help to form dinosaurs, sea creatures, and other characters and creatures at the annual event.
But this is a not-haunted happening created for families, and little kids, as well as date nights, solo guests, and anyone who embraces a Halloween-style offering that is more about a serene nature setting, no sudden startles or shrieks needed.
Other enticements include a pumpkin light show — that happens every half hour — as well as spots for festive photos. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, too.
“We’re thrilled to bring Magic of the Jack O’Lanterns back for another unforgettable season at South Coast Botanic Garden,” said General Manager Norberto Urrea.
“This year’s show features thousands of hand-carved pumpkins along a beautiful trail, with radiant light displays and immersive scenes at every turn.”
“It’s the perfect way to kick off the Halloween season with family, friends, little ones, and the people you love.”
If a low-sensory experience is what you’re seeking, look to Sept. 27.
Artist Thomas Dambo’s beloved “TROLLS” are currently festooning the Palos Verdes Peninsula garden, but they must move on after Oct. 4.
Don’t be too blue: Other wondrous figures will appear among the trees and shrubs when several dinosaurs bring their prehistoric panache to South Coast Botanic Garden starting Nov. 7.
