Sea lion’s death after being found in distress at San Francisco beach sparks mystery
SAN FRANCISCO —
A sea lion found in distress at Crissy Field East Beach in San Francisco on Monday morning has died.
The cause of death is not yet known, but toxic algae blooms have been killing and sickening sea lions. Fish consume the algae, and sea lions ingest the fish, leading to a buildup of neurotoxins that can cause severe medical issues.
“There’s been a lot of domoic acid and a lot of the patients have been coming in with that, but until the animal gets over to our vet staff and they can properly diagnose the animal, we won’t know for certain what is wrong with it,” said Patti Jensen, a volunteer with the Marine Mammal Center.
Volunteers are warning people and dogs to stay away from the area in case the sea lion had something contagious.
