With the Kern County Fair now two weeks away, anticipation is building for 12 straight days of amusement rides, food, musical entertainment and more at the fairgrounds.
For more than 100 years, the Kern County Fair has drawn families while maintaining a small-town feel. This year, fairgoers can expect a mix of familiar favorites and new additions. This year’s theme is: The Place to Be.
“We have a lot of traditional things, you know, that people can expect every year, but we sprinkle in some new stuff each time,” said Chelsey Roberts, marketing specialist for the Kern County Fair.
Along with longtime staples such as fair food and the racing pigs, the fair is adding new food options, including Italian specialty items, mac and cheese, and a cookie stand Roberts recommended.
New entertainment is also part of the lineup. “You’re used to seeing your traditional racing pigs out there, but we now have something where you can race your own pig. There’s tons of things sprinkled in and we’re excited for everybody to come out,” Roberts said.
For families looking to save money, discount admission tickets and ride fares are available on the fair’s website, including a four-pack special for $40.
Additional ways to get free admission are also available. “You can donate blood at any Houchin blood bank and get a free admission pass. Kids have reading roundups going on at school right now where they can read and earn a free admission pass. And we also have Feed the Need Day, which is on the first Tuesday of the fair, and it’s free admission with exchange of six canned food items,” Roberts said.
There’s not only musical artists at the Concert Series. But the fair will also bring back its Road to the Fair Karaoke Contest.
