ROCHESTER, Mich. – Cleveland State (1-3-1, 0-1-0) opened its title defense with a 2-0 loss to Oakland (2-2-1, 1-0-0) on Wednesday evening.
The opening half went scoreless with the Golden Grizzlies holding a 5-4 edge in shots. However, the shots on goal favored the Vikings 2-1 and corner kicks 3-1.
Oakland obtained the 1-0 lead just four minutes into the second half on a corner kick and doubled the margin in the 82nd minute with an unassisted goal.
Cleveland State held an 11-10 edge in shots with each team putting three shots on frame. The Green and White held a commanding 7-3 advantage in corners.
Tom Mertz paced the game with four shots including two on frame. Domenic Ruggiero followed with three shots. Aleksandar Kolar made one save in goal.
The Vikings remain in Horizon League play on Saturday at home against Detroit Mercy with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
