Maybe Buchanan High viewed playing Liberty-Bakersfield as its biggest test of the year.
Or maybe not.
Either way, the Bears quickly took care of business.
The Fresno Bee’s third-ranked Buchanan scored early and often, rolling to a 49-7 victory over No. 17 Liberty-Bakersfield on Thursday in Bakersfield.
Buchanan quarterback Tommy Devany and running back Gannon Sever led the way offensively.
Devany had plenty of time in the pocket and threw three touchdown passes, while Sever broke loose for a 47-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that gave Buchanan a 34-0 lead with 6 minutes remaining in the first half. Sever finished with three touchdowns.
For the first time this season, the Bears’ defense stood tall, holding an opponent to fewer than 20 points.
Through their first three games, Buchanan (3-1) had allowed 82 points, including 34 against Manteca.
That is now in the past.
The Bears clamped down against Liberty-Bakersfield, giving their offense plenty of cushion and cruising to the victory.
No. 11 Kingsburg 33, El Diamante 0
The Vikings scored 33 points in the first half and rolled to a shutout victory over the Miners.
Kingsburg improved to 3-1.
