A new Sprouts Farmers Market is opening next month in San Diego, filling a void left by a beloved neighborhood Hispanic supermarket.
The new Sprouts store, at 3245 El Cajon Blvd., just east of Interstate 805, will open Oct. 2, the company’s website says.
The store replaces Pancho Villa Farmer’s Market, which specialized in Mexican cuisine — both ingredients and prepared foods.
With this store, the Sprouts chain, founded in San Diego and based in Arizona, will have 11 stores in the city of San Diego and 25 countywide, not counting two independently operated stores in Chula Vista.
When Pancho Villa’s lease was not renewed and it closed more than a year ago, fans of its tortillas that were made in-house waged a campaign to find a new home for the tortillas and the staff who made them.
They ended up at at Windmill Farms, in Del Cerro.
