Firefighters climb 22 stories in Sacramento to honor 9/11 first responders
SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Firefighters participated in a 22-story stair climb at the Esquire Tower in downtown Sacramento to honor the first responders who died on 9/11.
Crews climbed up and down the tower five times, completing 110 flights of stairs to represent the height of the World Trade Center towers.
“It makes you humble. Something like that we don’t have in Belgium,” said Pieter-Jan Suetens, a firefighter from Belgium. “It is important to remember the things that need to be remembered, and that’s why it’s important to me to be here today.”
During the climb, each firefighter carried the name of someone who died on 9/11. At the top of the tower, they rang a bell and hung up name tags to honor the fallen.
