Eight people were taken to the hospital after a fire erupted at a nursing home in Glendale on Friday, officials said.
The blaze broke out at the home on West Mountain Street, not far from Brand Park, at around 4:45 p.m., according to the Glendale Fire Department. Video showed flames and heavy smoke billowing into the sky.
Officials say several people were inside the home at the time. All six patients at the home, an employee and a neighbor were hospitalized with minor injuries, the fire department said.
Cell phone video shows nurses and neighbors lifting patients out of their beds and trying to pull them out of the building. Brothers Narek and Alex Bazinyan were two people who jumped in to help.
“We basically ran in, no second thoughts,” Narek Bazinyan, who lives next to the home, told NBC Los Angeles. “Pretty much, the fire was right next to us. We’re basically standing in the fire. We inhaled so much smoke.”
Firefighters contained the blaze to the one building and were able to put out the flames.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
