Kreider played on the Anaheim Ducks last season, his first in Orange County after playing his entire career with the New York Rangers. Kreider posted 22-28-50 totals in his lone season there.
He and the Ducks officially agreed to terminate his contract earlier this week, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent.
The 35-year-old Boxford, MA native has 348-284-632 career point totals, along with another 50 goals and 33 assists in 135 career playoff games.
Canadiens fans still remember his collision with Habs goaltender Carey Price in the 2014 Eastern Conference Final, which resulted in a right knee injury that ultimately led to the end of his career.
