Jacqueline Singer

OBITUARY

Jacqueline Singer passed away August 10, 2026 in the extended loving care of her middle son, Edward. She was born in New York in 1929, sang in a Long Island professional band, and as a recent divorcee with two young boys (David and Edward), left all her familial support for the drier climate of “unfamiliar” Tucson in hopes of optimizing the life of her asthmatic son, Edward. There, Jacky met and married Paul Singer and had a third son (Ira).

After raising her three children, Jacky returned to school, attending Grossmont College and San Diego State University to obtain her teaching degree. At SDSU Jacky was an active member of the Readers’ Theater. For more than 15 years, she taught English, public speaking and debate at Kearny High School and directed musicals such as “Grease”, “Annie” and “Peter Pan”.

Like other devoted teachers, “Mrs. Singer” made an indelible impression on many of her students. One whose mother prematurely passed away kept in close touch with Jacky to the present, and referred to her as “Mrs. Mom” recalling that at Kearny, Mrs. Singer possessed the patience of a saint, the fierce encouragement of a Super Bowl coach, and an unconditional love for every single one of her students. She taught her students to live with integrity and character.

Jacky’s husband Paul passed away in 2022 after 62 years of marriage. Her youngest son Ira, an engineering graduate at SDSU, passed away in 1990. Edward, a teacher for over 30 years at Gompers Preparatory School, Kearny, University and Garfield High schools was retired and passed away this month. David Singer retired in 2020 after 38 years as a professor at San Diego City College.

Jacky lives on in the hearts of the students she touched. Her surviving son will sorely miss attending musicals at The Old Globe and La Jolla Playhouse with his mommy.
