A Redding man died after jumping off a boat into Lake Shasta after a pet dog, California sheriff’s officials said.
Geordan White, 60, jumped from a moving boat into the lake to rescue the dog, which also had jumped off the boat, at about 9 a.m Friday, Sept. 11, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
He began struggling in the water and called for help, deputies said. Someone threw a flotation device to White, who lost his grip on it and vanished under the water.
Someone was able to rescue the dog.
The sheriff’s dive team and U.S. Forest Service ranger searched Lake Shasta for White after he was reported missing, deputies said.
Divers found his body on Saturday. An autopsy has been scheduled.
Lake Shasta is about 170 miles north of Sacramento.
