The San Francisco Giants placed Rafael Devers on the 60-day injured list on Sunday due to a “core muscle injury” that the club said he’s been dealing with for much of the season. He’ll consult with Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia on Monday and will undergo a surgical procedure the next day if one is recommended.
The Giants selected outfielder Scott Bandura from Triple-A Sacramento and the Princeton alum will make his major-league debut as the designated hitter while batting fifth against the San Diego Padres in Sunday’s series finale. Bandura, 25, was a Little League teammate of Mo’ne Davis, who became the first girl to throw a shutout in Little League World Series history. Bandura, a left-handed hitter who was a seventh-round draft pick in 2023, was batting .320/.407/.895 with 13 home runs, 34 stolen bases and 104 runs scored between Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Sacramento. The Giants would have had to add Bandura to the 40-man roster after the season to protect him from being taken in the Rule 5 draft.
After a dreadful offensive start to his season, Devers has been one of the Giants’ few bright spots for months. He hit his 37th home run in Saturday’s 7-6 loss to the San Diego Padres, his seventh homer in September. The 29-year-old was named National League Player of the Week on Sept. 8 after going 10-for-26 with six homers, 13 RBIs and a 1.669 OPS from Sept. 1-7.
Devers’ outstanding production after April has made Buster Posey’s biggest move as president of baseball operations look better, though Devers’ slow start — along with poor production from most of the team — contributed to the Giants (62-87) being buried in the standings. He’s under contract for the next seven seasons at $28.5 million per year.
