SacRT begins testing for Green Line near Sacramento’s Railyards
SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Sacramento Regional Transit riders may notice trains moving along the Green Line near the Railyards area starting Monday, but passengers won’t be able to board them just yet.
SacRT began operator training and train testing on the Green Line on Sept. 14, as the agency prepares to restore passenger service, which has been suspended for more than a year.
The trains being used for training will display “TESTING” on their headsigns to make it clear they are not in service.
SacRT temporarily suspended Green Line service in June 2025 to allow for major construction in Sacramento’s Railyards, including track alignment work and construction of a new light rail station at 7th Street and Railyards Boulevard.
The new station will connect the growing Railyards development with SacRT’s light rail system. The Green Line runs between 13th Street in downtown Sacramento and Township 9 near Richards Boulevard. SacRT has also identified the Railyards station as an important future connection for new housing, businesses and the planned Major League Soccer stadium.
Before passenger service can resume, SacRT said operators must complete training, and the system must undergo required testing and receive final approvals.
SacRT expects the Green Line to reopen to passengers by mid-October.
Until then, riders traveling to and from the Richards Boulevard area can use SacRT Bus Route 11 to connect with downtown light rail service.
SacRT is reminding people who see Green Line trains running during the testing period not to attempt to board them.
