PONTIAC, Mich. – People heading to Pontiac Panthers youth football games at Wisner Stadium will now see Oakland County sheriff’s deputies on-site. This follows a weekend shooting that injured two people during a game.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to the stadium Sunday afternoon, where they found a 19-year-old Pontiac man who had been shot in the buttocks and a 27-year-old Pontiac woman who’d been hit in the head with a gun.
Witnesses gave deputies a description of the shooter, and he was later arrested. Authorities identified the person arrested as a 37-year-old Auburn Hills man. Investigators believe the shooting was unrelated to the game.
“I felt fine until I heard shots ring out. I only heard three shots,” said Bonita Cameron, who was at the game supporting her grandchildren. “There were adults that were grabbing kids up and they were taking them to safety.”
Cameron said she immediately dropped to the ground and described the scene as frightening, but credited parents and other adults from the organization with quickly moving children away from danger.
The shooting, she said, has left her grandchildren traumatized and has renewed her concerns about security at youth sporting events.
“I would like to see full security just like they do when the kids have to go to school,” Cameron said. “We need to have a scanner. We need to have something that prohibits people from being able to bring in weapons. Our babies deserve, our community deserves better. We deserve better.”
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said his deputies where on-site minutes after receiving the call for what happened at the stadium. He also said, they will be making their presence known at games.
“For the remaining games we’re going to have more deputies on scene just to make sure they feel more comfortable and more safe and more visible,” Bouchard said.
A Pontiac Panthers board member said the organization is reviewing how to strengthen its emergency response if violence occurs in the future. Team leaders plan to meet with players and families, Tuesday to have a check-in. A mental health counselor will be available for anyone who needs support.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
