Pedestrian Hit By Three Vehicles Dies, But Only One Driver Stopped

A pedestrian was struck by three vehicles and killed in Long Beach, but only one driver stopped as required, authorities said.

Officers were sent to investigate a reported collision on Pacific Avenue, north of Pacific Coast Highway, at about 7:25 p.m. Sunday, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

They found a man in the roadway and rendered aid until paramedics from the Long Beach Fire Department arrived and took him to a hospital, where was later pronounced dead, police said. His name was withheld pending positive identification and notification of his next of kin.

“The preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian was walking eastbound across Pacific Avenue, outside of a marked crosswalk,” according to an LBPD statement. “The pedestrian stepped into the roadway from the center median and was struck by an unknown white SUV, then an unknown dark colored sedan. A third vehicle, a 2021 Jaguar, also struck the pedestrian. The driver of the third vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.”

Speed, distracted driving and impaired driving do not appear to be factors in the collision, police said.
