FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — An armed robbery suspect was taken into custody Tuesday night after an hourslong standoff with Fresno police and SWAT officers at a northeast Fresno home.
The Fresno Police Department said the investigation began around 11:10 a.m. with a reported armed robbery at the AutoZone at 3102 E. Gettysburg Ave., near First Street.
Police said the man entered the store, showed a gun and stole items before leaving in a car on Gettysburg Avenue.
Undercover officers who were already in the area began searching nearby neighborhoods and spotted a car matching the description in the backyard of a home along East Gettysburg Avenue. Officers also saw a man matching the suspect’s description in the backyard.
Police surrounded the home and used a drone to track the suspect as he went inside. Negotiators spent several hours trying to make contact with him, but police said they were unsuccessful.
Because the robbery involved a gun, SWAT was called to the scene and took over the operation.
Gettysburg Avenue was shut down between First and Fresno streets as officers surrounded the home.
SWAT officers eventually entered the home and took the suspect into custody. Police said no force was used and no one was injured.
A second person was also inside the home, but police said only one person is suspected in the robbery.
The suspect was taken to Fresno Police Department headquarters for questioning. Police said he has a criminal history and lives at the home where the standoff occurred.
Detectives remained at the scene Tuesday night serving a search warrant. Gettysburg Avenue was expected to remain closed for about an hour after the arrest while investigators searched the property.
