Oakland County Restaurant Quest: Opa’s Gyros & Souvlaki in Rochester Hills

Rochester Hills, MI -Traditional Greek street food has a place in the Brooklands neighborhood of Rochester Hills, thanks to Opa’s Gyros and Souvlaki. Brooklands is a close-knit community between John R and Dequindre along Avon Road, where cute neighborhood restaurants and shops mix perfectly with homes and apartments, and a park that brings joy to those who play, walk, and relax there.
Opa’s Gyros and Souvlaki has a simple menu centered around the meals in their name. The two may seem similar, but Gyros and Souvlaki are made in different ways. In Greek, the word “gyro” means “turn.” With gyros there are layers of meat stacked into a cone, roasted on a vertical split, and shaved off in thin strips. Souvlaki means “little skewer.” With Souvlaki meat is cut into cubes, marinated, and grilled.
The Lamb & Beef Gyro came with the shaved meat inside a soft pita with onions, tomato, tzatziki sauce, and fries. I also had the chicken version. In Grecian street food, fries are traditionally served inside, making it a full meal that is easy for on the go.
The Pork Souvlaki stick has chunks of meat on skewers over pita bread. And the Doner Chicken Souvlaki is served on a bun with Opa sauce, onion, and tomato. The Greek Salad comes with thick cut chunks of bell pepper, tomato, cucumber, olives, and onion with a thick slice of Feta cheese on top, and Greek dressing. My favorite thing was the Avgolemomo Soup, which is a creamy and tangy Greek lemon soup with a stunningly rich broth with a bit of chicken, spinach, parsley, and carrots.
Opa’s also has dessert. Kadaif has thin shreds of phyllo dough that are baked to a crisp and soaked in sweet syrup. There’s also the amazing Orange Cake, which has a syrupy orange flavor throughout.
Opa’s is located at 1838 E Auburn Rd in Rochester Hills. I’m not finding a website for them at the time of publishing, but they can be found on Door Dash.
