Volunteers are needed for the 42nd annual California Coastal Cleanup Day happening Saturday morning. The annual event helps keep the state’s beaches and waterways clear of litter and debris.
The River City Waterway Alliance and Caltrans’ Stormwater Program are partnering to remove debris on the Sacramento riverfront at Robert T. Matsui Waterfront Park on September 19. The cleanup is part of a statewide effort and is spearheaded by the California Coastal Commission.
More than 50,000 participants are expected to help remove trash from beaches, rivers, creeks, bays and wetlands during the state’s largest annual volunteer event to take place across more than 700 sites across all 58 counties, according to the California Department of Parks and Recreation.
Trash bags will be provided to volunteers, although participants are encouraged to bring their own reusable supplies, such as work gloves, buckets and grabbers to limit waste.
Volunteers are also encouraged to submit a volunteer waiver online before the event, but paper copies will be available on the day of the cleanup as well. Volunteers under 16 years of age will require a parental or caregiver signature.
The California Coastal Commission has posted an interactive map of cleanup locations to aid volunteers in finding cleanup locations.
Saturday’s event runs from 9 a.m. to noon.
