In the late 1700s, when this part of Southern California was still populated by the Tongva people, the king of Spain awarded 300,000 acres of land to one man — a soldier named Manuel Perez Nieto.
A small fraction of that land still exists today, much as it did back then. It’s called Rancho Los Alamitos, and it’s open for the public to explore.
Admission to Rancho Los Alamitos is free, but reservations are required for guided tours.
