As the trees begin to change colors and pumpkin spice lattes become the norm again, I find myself retreating back into the comfort of a very special show: “Gilmore Girls.” The fall is the perfect season to not just rewatch “Gilmore Girls,” but to live like Lorelai and Rory Gilmore for a day. And luckily for us, Berkeley has its fair share of charming and picturesque spots to enjoy — just like the girls’ hometown of Stars Hollow. So get out your favorite white sweater and prepare to drink a lot of caffeine. “Gilmore Girls” season is officially here!
Start your morning off with coffee (of course)
This is your excuse to finally try that cafe you’ve been eyeing or revisit a tried and true favorite. But if you want the cozy fall aesthetic, then I’d recommend Edmonds’ Café or The Hidden Cafe. And if you’re willing to go a little farther, then a place like El Tiny Cafe might be right up your alley! Not only can you enjoy a good cup of coffee, but you can also take the time to sit back, relax and rifle through the latest copy of The Daily Californian.
Stop by a bookstore
Stars Hollow had just the one, but Berkeley has several local bookshops that would make the perfect addition to any “Gilmore Girls”-themed day. You could consider stopping by my personal favorite Sleepy Cat Books, Moe’s Books, Pegasus Books Downtown or even Mrs. Dalloway’s — coincidentally, “Gilmore Girls” has referenced Virginia Woolf multiple times. If you’re anything like Rory, this could very well be the last stop of your day, but I’m afraid the article doesn’t end here!
Lock in at the Graduate Berkeley
Are you really a UC Berkeley student if you don’t squeeze in at least one study session? Whether you have to take care of an assignment or want to start studying for a midterm, I recommend heading over to the Graduate by Hilton Berkeley hotel. After all, Lorelai worked as an inn manager and Rory would often help out, sometimes getting her schoolwork done there. If you have to study, you might as well do it in true “Gilmore Girls” fashion!
Grab lunch at Oceanview Diner
By now, you’re probably starving. For lunch, feel free to get burgers, pizza, hot dogs or anything you’d normally consider to be junk food. Oceanview Diner on Fourth Street seems to match the vibe and menu of Luke’s Diner, but any similar restaurant will do!
Have your own “Scene in a Mall”
Lorelai and Rory have some of the most iconic outfits, and it’s always fun to update your wardrobe during the fall! Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek is one of my favorite places to shop, but you can also explore Berkeley’s vintage stores — think Anastasia’s Vintage on Telegraph Avenue or Crossroads downtown, not to be confused with Croads. This activity is best done with a friend or two, especially if you want to continue your “Gilmore Girls” day with the next step.
Go for “Friday night dinner”
Every Friday night, Lorelai and Rory have dinner with Lorelai’s wealthy parents, Emily and Richard Gilmore. If you want to similarly treat yourself to a fancy restaurant like Il Fornaio or indulge yourself in a three-course homemade meal (without any walnuts in the salad), now’s the time! Just make sure you save some room for dessert — Lorelai and Rory would!
Wind down with movies and popcorn
If you still have the energy, you might catch a movie at Rialto Cinemas in Elmwood or another local theater. Otherwise, you could consider having friends over for a sleepover and movie night! You can’t go wrong with a Gilmore favorite like “Casablanca” and “Pippi Longstocking,” or the show “Gilmore Girls” itself. Whether it’s your first or fiftieth time watching “Gilmore Girls,” there’s always something new to appreciate about it!
There are plenty of fun activities to do in the fall, and hopefully this gives you some additional ideas for what to do with friends on your next day off. So make those plans in the group chat and send out those Google Calendar invites. Your perfect “Gilmore Girls” day awaits!
