BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A man was arrested months after allegedly murdering his girlfriend, 31-year-old Ariana Rangel Ortega, in southwest Bakersfield back in July 2026. An autopsy showed her death was caused by strangulation and blunt force injuries.
The Bakersfield Police Department said on Thursday, September 17th, 2026, Bakersfield Police Department homicide detectives and members of their Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) arrested 34-year-old Alfonso Rosales-Ortiz for the murder of his girlfriend, 31-year-old Ariana Rangel Ortega.
Police said on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, just after 9 a.m., Ortega was found non-responsive in her home in the 10300 block of Monahan Street in southwest Bakersfield.
Emergency medical personnel took Ortega to Mercy Hospital Southwest, where she was pronounced dead at 9:31 a.m.
Police said Rosales-Ortiz and the victim had a history of domestic violence incidents.
While the victim did not show obvious signs of recent trauma at that time, during the investigation, BPD homicide detectives developed evidence implicating Rosales-Ortiz in the death, according to police.
The Kern County Coroner’s Office subsequently ruled the victim’s death a homicide. The report said an autopsy was conducted, and the cause of death was determined to be the combined effects of strangulation and blunt force injuries
