When the Giants began searching for a new manager, president of baseball operations Buster Posey told reporters that he did not plan on bringing back Bruce Bochy for a second term. Still, Posey made it clear that the “the door is always open here for some sort of role.”

The Giants announced on Monday morning that they have hired Bochy, a future Hall of Famer who won three World Series titles in San Francisco, as a special adviser to baseball operations.

“I couldn’t be more excited to reconnect with the Giants organization and so many familiar faces,” Bochy said in a press release. “This organization and city mean a lot to me and my family, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute in any way I can.”

“Having Boch back in the organization means a great deal to all of us,” Posey said in a press release. “His experience, leadership, and feel for the game are unmatched, and his perspective will be invaluable as we continue building towards sustained success.”

Posey consulted Bochy and Dusty Baker, a fellow future Hall of Famer who’s currently a special adviser to baseball operations, prior to hiring new manager Tony Vitello. With Bochy in the fold alongside Baker, Vitello will be able to regularly consult two of the winningest mangers in baseball history as he makes the unprecedented leap from collegiate head coach to major-league manager.

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Dusty and for Boch,” Posey said. “They came away feeling very positive about the person. It’s like I mentioned before, there’s going to be uncertainties and risks in any hire. This one’s probably more than a lot of other places we could’ve gone, but I’m betting on the person.”

Bochy, 70, served as the Giants’ manager for 13 seasons from 2007-19, winning three World Series titles in ’10, ’12 and ’14. Following his retirement in ’19, he worked as a special adviser for the Giants from 2020-22 before coming out of retirement to manage the Texas Rangers. Bochy would win a World Series in his first season as the Rangers’ manager, becoming the sixth manager in major-league history to win at least four championships.

Over 28 years as a manager with the Padres (1995-2006), Giants and Rangers (2023-25), Bochy totaled the sixth-most victories by any manager in major-league history (2,252). He’s also the only manager in major-league history to win at least 900 games with multiple teams, totaling 951 victories with the Padres and 1,052 with the Giants.

“We are thrilled to welcome Boch back to the Giants family as a Special Advisor to Baseball Operations,” said Giants president and CEO Larry Baer in a statement. “Few people in baseball have his depth of knowledge, insight, and lived experience of the game. He shares a rich history with our organization and fans, and it’s special to have him back in orange and black.”
