FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Fresno Unified School District has paused the Hoover High School junior varsity football program effective immediately while it reviews a practice-related injury involving a student-athlete.
Earlier this week, a Hoover High School JV football player was injured during practice and was transported by ambulance to a hospital, where the student received medical care.
District and school staff remain in close contact with the student’s family and are coordinating academic support to help the student stay on track with studies during recovery.
As part of district protocol, when a serious injury occurs during a school activity, Fresno Unified placed the faculty involved on administrative leave while it conducts its review.
Four coaches and a trainer have been placed on leave until the review concludes.
The district said administrative leave is a routine, precautionary step and “not a finding of wrongdoing or a reflection on the individuals involved.”
The district said it will not share additional information about the personnel or the leave because it is a personnel matter.
District and school leaders are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the injury and athletic safety protocols more broadly, including coaching supervision, emergency response procedures and adherence to established safety guidelines.
The JV football program will remain paused during the review, but the district said the pause does not affect varsity football activities.
The district said it will not release further details about the nature or extent of the injury out of respect for the student and family’s privacy.
Fresno Unified said it will provide updates as appropriate once the review is complete or if significant developments arise.
