LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CALIF. — A 3.1 magnitude quake rattled near Compton, about 6.6 miles north of Long Beach, on Thursday around midday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The tremor shook the area at 1:32 p.m. It occurred at a depth of 8 miles with the epicenter about 2 miles south-southeast of Compton.

According to the USGS DYFI report, residents in several cities, including Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Fullerton and Whittier, reported experiencing the quake.

Over the last week, there have been six earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater centered nearby. The strongest, a 3.3 magnitude quake, was reported close to Avalon on Sep. 12.
