A southeast Fresno hotel was evacuated Friday night after police found what appeared to be a grenade inside a man’s vehicle.
The discovery prompted officers to close the area around Second Street and Jensen Avenue while the Fresno Police Department’s bomb squad assessed the device.
Driving the news: Officers were patrolling the area when they contacted a man parked outside a hotel.
Police did not disclose what prompted the initial contact but said officers had encountered the man previously.
After detaining him, officers searched his vehicle and found the apparent grenade.
The response: Hotel guests were evacuated as a precaution while bomb technicians investigated.
Police also temporarily closed Second Street and Jensen Avenue during the response.
No injuries were reported.
What remains unclear: Authorities have not said whether the grenade was live or capable of exploding.
