A 56-year-old man went overboard Friday night, Sept. 18, on a Carnival cruise ship as it was traveling from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to Long Beach, authorities said.
The man went overboard about 50 miles off the coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Charlie Valor said.
Carnival Cruise Line officials were notified Saturday of a missing guest and initiated search and investigation procedures, including reviewing surveillance footage on the Carnival Panorama, according to a Carnival spokesperson.
Carnival officials then notified the Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon, officials said.
The Coast Guard has been coordinating with the Mexican Navy and nearby commercial vessels in ongoing search and rescue efforts since then, Valor said.
As of Sunday night, the man had not been located.
“Carnival is providing support to the family who was traveling with the guest, and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones,” a Carnival spokesperson said in a statement.
The ship departed from Long Beach on Sept. 13 for a 7-night trip, sailing to Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta before returning to Long Beach on Sunday.
Further details about the man or how he fell from the ship were not available.
