LA JOLLA, Calif. — Sunday night’s nonconference men’s soccer match went the way of visiting UC Irvine, who bested UC San Diego 2-0 at Triton Soccer Stadium.
A chippy contest saw the two teams combine for 33 fouls and five yellow cards. The Tritons had eight shots, four of which were on target. The Anteaters finished with 12 shots, four of which were on frame.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC Irvine opened the scoring in the 24th minute on a set piece. A free kick from the left side was headed toward goal, taking a high angle that eventually hit the post and went in.
The Tritons’ best chance of the first half came in the 29th minute. A cross to striker Gavin Allegaert saw the sophomore get a headed shot off at the top of the six-yard box, with his effort just missing high.
The UC Irvine lead grew to 2-0 in the 61st minute. A quick passing sequence unlocked the defense, with the Tritons doing well to recover and block an initial shot. But the ensuing rebound fell to a wide-open Anteater, who buried the second goal of the contest.
UC San Diego continued to push on offense as the match progressed. Oren Stuppel had a pair of shots that tested the Irvine defense, and Lalo Barbieri forced a strong save in the 89th minute. The Tritons were ultimately held scoreless for just the second time this season.
TRITON TIDBITS
The Tritons gave up multiple goals for the first time this season.
A season-high 763 fans were in attendance at Triton Soccer Stadium.
QUOTABLE
“Full credit to Irvine, they played a fantastic game,” head coach Jon Pascale said. “They are a very good team, really well coached and credit to their players. They were just a little bit quicker with their ideas and a little bit sharper. We had our moments, but we couldn’t quite execute in the final third. We have a quick turnaround and another good opponent coming in here on Wednesday. Now it is about getting ready for the next match and learning from tonight.”
