Sundown Cinema is one of San Francisco’s most popular free events, bringing movie screenings to parks across the city. The program took a brief hiatus last summer but returned in full for 2026, and the next free movie screening is in less than a week.

The next Sundown Cinema is Friday, September 25, at the Ferry Building. The family-friendly comedy classic School of Rock is the featured film of the night, and you can enjoy pre-screening activities. The movie will start after sunset, but we recommend getting there early to scope out a good spot. After the September screening, there will be only one more Sundown Cinema in 2026, featuring the classic Halloween movie Beetlejuice at Crane Cove Park.
This month’s screening is also a great opportunity to explore the Ferry Building, which hosts a variety of restaurants and local retailers. We recommend grabbing some burgers from Gott’s Roadside to enjoy during the movie, or checking out Fort Point Beer Company for a drink before the screening. Other notable retailers include Book Passage, Dandelion Chocolate, Heath Ceramics, and many more.
Sundown Cinema is free to attend and family-friendly. Just bring a picnic blanket and some layers to stay warm during the show. The events are always well attended, so be sure to get there early to find an ideal spot for your group.
