OAKLAND –An exchange of gunfire early Monday between the occupants of several vehicles and security guards at a West Oakland public housing complex left a 15-year-old boy wounded, authorities said.
The boy was in stable condition at a hospital with a wound to his foot and was placed under arrest, authorities said.
No one else was reported injured.
The shooting, which activated a gunshot detection alert system, happened about 12:43 a.m. Monday in the 1000 block of Eighth Street.
According to initial police reports as many as four vehicles each containing several occupants were driving eastbound on Eighth Street when the occupants of at least two of the vehicles began shooting at three housing complex security guards, who returned fire.
In addition to the gunshot detection system alert, the guards also called police but the vehicles were gone by the time officers arrived at the scene.
But a short time later, a 15-year-old boy, who lives in another part of West Oakland, showed up wounded at a hospital, police said.
Police were able to link him to a Hyundai found parked near the hospital; the vehicle, which had at least one bullet hole, turned out to have been stolen earlier in Oakland and was confirmed to be involved in the shooting. Inside the vehicle, police found blood on the driver’s seat and a pistol, authorities said.
According to initial reports, it is believed the youth was the Hyundai driver and that others in the vehicle fired shots. He was placed under arrest on suspicion of vehicle theft and possession of a firearm.
The other occupants of the Hyundai, as well as the other vehicles involved in the shooting and their occupants, were being sought.
The guards who fired shots were released after questioning.
A motive for the shooting is under investigation.
