San Diego International Airport passengers were treated to an impromptu performance Monday by two-time Grammy Award winner Jason Mraz.
Mraz, who also runs a San Diego County avocado farm and is a partner in an Oceanside coffee shop, was traveling through the airport at the same time that Evan Diamond, a local singer-songwriter and San Diego Music Awards honoree, was performing as part of the airport’s on-call musicians program. Diamond began playing the song “I’m Yours,” and Mraz walked over to join her, according to Nick Cruz, founder of Elevated Arts, who said he works with the airport on the music series.
In videos of the performance posted by the airport, Mraz harmonizes with Diamond, who posted later on Instagram that she’s “gonna be thinking about this moment for a long time.”
Cruz shared that he heard Mraz was eating at a nearby restaurant in Terminal 1 and shared it with Diamond, who decided to play “I’m Yours.” Mraz then joined in, without being asked, Cruz said.
“Huge thank you to @jason_mraz for being so kind and gracious, sharing the stage with a musician like you was truly an honor,” Diamond wrote on Instagram. “Another thank you to @elevatedarts619 and the @sandiegoairport for providing such a great space for musicians.”
